Thomas Farmer Watkins born London abt 1839 (UK & Ireland)

My grandfather was Thomas Henry Watkins b Nov 1885, Sheffield, YKS
His father was Owen Watkins born 1865 Birmingham, married to Emma Reid.
On Owen's birth certificate it says his parents were Thomas Farmer Watkins and Emma Barber who I think were married Mar 1858 in Birmingham.

Can anyone provide any additional information on Thomas Farmer Watkins and his ancestors?

Thanks

Thank you very much slowhands, that certainly describes the family that I am tracing. I really appreciate your help. Thomas Henry Watkins 1885/86 was my grandfather.

I noticed an 1851 at the end of your post - did you also find something from the 1851 census on the parents of Thomas Farmer Watkins?

Somewhere I saw a note that his parents were Thomas and Mary Watkins but no other info.

Thanks - for the 1841 info - the first names are certainly similar and the Thomas DOB is close...

It a good start, I will have to investigate it further

Thomas Farmer Watkins born London abt 1839

I have checked my files and realized that I have a marriage certificate for Thomas Farmer Watkins to Emma Barber (21 March 1858) which states that his father was Thomas Watkins, engineer and Emma's father was Joseph Barber, Blacksmith.

Therefore, the 1841 census record for William and Sarah Watkins is not the correct family for our young Thomas.

On FamilySearch IGI I have located a christening for a Thomas Watkins in London 1839, parents Thomas and Mary Watkins. Using a parent search I also identified the following children in this family; Mary Ann 1837, Thomas 1839, John 1842, James 1845, Elizabeth 1847 and Sarah 1850. (all christened at the same church in London)

However, I have not been able to find an 1841, 1851 or 1861 census with this family in it.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Fantastic

the 1841 and 1851 families are a perfect fit except Elizabeth 1847 is missing. However a check of FreeBMD shows 5 different Elizabeth Watkins died between 1847 and 1851 so good chance she was one of these.

Thank you very much

Based on the 1851 census, I have now located the father of Thomas Farmer Watkins. He is Thomas Watkins born 1804 Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, married to Mary about 1836 and his parents were Thomas and Sarah Watkins who seem to have had 4 children christened in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire 1802-1806.

I cannot find any good leads for the birth of his mother Mary (abt 1816), or for the birth of his grandparents Thomas and Sarah (about 1787-1797).

This family seemed like a good fit until I discovered a Thomas Watkins b 1839 Lambeth in the 1881 Census, living on the same street as he was in 1841, 1851 and plying the same carpentry trade as his father. So I have to conclude that he is not the Thomas Watkins b 1837/1838 in London (Kent or Middlesex) according to the 1861, 1871 Census - living in Sheffield in 1871.

So, I am back looking for the parents for Thomas Watkins b1837/38 London (Kent or Middlesex) with father Thomas. Any other ideas?
