Family Ties

G'day Chauncy.

Your Grandfather (Edward Alexander) was my Uncle. Your dad and I are
cousins.

How much of your immediate Watkins family history do you know? I'll give you
some of what I know, perhaps it will fill some gaps.

Your grandfather was the son of George Watkin Glyn Watkins. (1873-1948) and
Mary Isobel (Belle) Cronin

There were five children.
Daniel Glyn, (married Helen. No children)
Mary Elizabeth Glyn (Betty), (Married Les McCormack . 3 children . Mary, Anne and Helen)
Edward Alexander Glyn (Your Grandfather),
George Owen Glyn (My Father)
Anthony Glyn (Tony) who is still alive. I'm sure you would have met him.

The parents of George Watkin Glyn were
Daniel Glyn (born England 1844 died Australia 1907) and Caroline Weight (born England 1847 died Australia 1879)

Whilst I'm not 100% sure, I believe the elder Daniel Glyn's parents were
Daniel and Anne, and his siblings were
Thomas Edward,
Ann(e) Victoria,
and
Mary Helen.

The Elder Daniel Glyn and his young wife imigrated to Western Australia in
1870. They had two children who survived to adulthood.
George Watkin Glyn b1873 and
Carolyn (Caroline?) Marian (Marianne?) .b1871
I believe there were two more
Eva Glyn 1875-1894 and
Jesse Charlotte Glyn 1877-?

Caroline (The mother) died in 1879, and 1881 Daniel Glyn remarried the widow
Sarah Absolon (nee Bowles Hapgood) She had two surviving children of her
first marriage. ( Ernest H and Geraldine Elise).

Daniel Glyn and Sarah together had 4 more children.
Arthur Glyn 1882-1832.
Dorothy Glyn 1884-?
Hilda Grace Glyn 1889-1949
Basil Theodore Glyn (Theo) 1889-1937. This Theo had two children ("Dick" and Angela),
I have no idea where Dick finished up, its quite possible he and/or his
descendants may still be around), Angela. (married Peter Webb, a Kojonup farmer) They are still
alive.

As points of interest. (1) Our Family originated in Wales. Not sure when. I know the first Daniel Glyn was born in England but perhaps Daniel (his father) migrated from Wales to England. If not him, it would have only been a generation or two before. (2) Our surname was originally Watkin. The ( s ) was added later, I suspect a similar time to the migration from Wales to England.

Family Ties

Hi Theo,

Im Bridget, Chauncey's older sister. That info was great, I dont know much about our family's history but that was really good. Yes, Ive heard Dad mention he has a cousin Theo. And yes we have met Uncle Tony, we usually catch up with him every Christmas at Mandy and Andy's. I found it interesting that many of the names were passed down through the generations which I think is a great tradition. My middle name is Glyn and Connor (my youngest brother) has Edward as a middle name, from Edward Alexander our grandfather.

Anyway, cheers for the details.
Bridget

Daniel Glyn Watkins b. 1845 England was the Colonial Chaplain of Western Australia. There is a memorial to him in the north trancept of St Georges Cathedral in St Georges Tce, Perth Western Australia. He was also Chaplain at Greenough WA 1870-1875, chaplain at Fremantle 1875-1905, Archdeacon of Perth 1889-1907, Administrator of diocese of Perth during Bishops absence in 1891. THORNBOROUGH, in the hundred and deanery of Buckingham, lies about three miles and a half to the east of the county town. The manor belonged to the priory of Luffield, and was given, with the site of that monastery, to Sir Nicholas Throckmorton. Having passed by marriage to the family of Temple; to Thomas Roper, Lord Viscount Baltinglass; and Thomas Lennard Earl of Sussex, it was sold by the latter in 1707 to Benjamin Woodnoth, of whose family it was purchased by the late Earl Verney: it is now the property of his niece Mary Baroness Fermanagh.

In the church are some memorials of the Woodnoths. The rectory was given to the priory of Luffield by an ancestor of the Barons of Wolverton, and the great tithes were appropriated to that monastery. After the reformation the rectory was for many years annexed to the manor, but is now the property of the Marquis of Buckingham, who is patron of the vicarage. The parish has been inclosed by an act of parliament passed in 1797, when an allotment of land was given to the Marquis of Buckingham as rector, another allotment to the family of Lowndes as proprietors of a portion of tithes, and a corn rent to the vicar with a small allotment of land not exceeding 15 acres. An allotment of land was assigned to the poor in lieu of their right of cutting furze.

In 1847 George Lipscomb in his "The History and Antiquities of the County of Buckingham" listed the following Vicars for Thornborough:

1834 Daniel Watkins, A.M.

Family Ties

Hi Theo, I believe I connect into your WATKINS tree via Daniel Glyn born 16 Nov 1844 or rather through his sister Anne Victoria and her husband George Alfred Umney NELSON. George A U was the grandson of my 5xgreat-uncle William NELSON. I was delighted to find the info you've posted to the forum, telling me what happened to Daniel Glyn.
According to my research, the parents of Daniel Glyn and Anne Victoria were Rev Daniel WATKINS born c1804 Llywel, Breconshire and Anne ADAM born c1799 Llanfihangel Y Croeddyn, Cardiganshire, who married 21 Oct 1828 in Hoggeston, Bucks. Rev Dan was Vicar of Thornborough in Bucks and his 4 known children were born there:
1. Thomas Edward bn 17 Feb 1839 bap 23 Apr 1839
2. Anne Victoria bn 1 May 1840 bap 17 Jun 1840; died 9 Feb 1916 at 5 Clydesdale Road, Kensington, London, buried Sherington Bucks 12 Feb 1916
3. Mary Helen bn 23 Jun 1842 bap 3 Aug 1842; d. Feb 1874 Thornborough, buried there 24 Feb 1874
4. Daniel Glyn - whom you know all about! bn 16 Nov 1844; bap 2 Jan 1845 Thornborough.
There is clearly room between marriage and Thomas Edward's birth for more children. I haven't found them yet, nor have I gone further back on Rev Daniel or Ann ADAM, Welsh research being completely new and mysterious to me :) But most of my mother's family lived their lives for hundreds of years in North Bucks and nearby Oxon/Northants so I can probably help with more research there. It would be great to talk further with you, and anyone else connected to this tree.
Cheers, Celia in Chesterfield UK

Family Ties - oh dear, a mistake

Hi again, straight away I have to offer an apology and tell you that Rev Daniel WATKINS (father of Daniel Glyn) did not marry Ann ADAM in Hoggeston in 1828. The date of that marriage was 1728. This was research done a long while ago and I can't imagine now how I got it wrong. Big sigh and repeated apologies. I will go in search of the correct marriage which I would guess involved someone with the surname GLYN!
Cheers, Celia

Looking through the on-line whitepages of Australia I am unable to locate anyone with the surname of Webb living at Kojonup, maybe they living in a nearby town.

I would suggest you email Theo Watkins who I am sure would be happy to give you some information that would help.

You can email Theo through the contact form by clicking on the email icon at the side of the message his has posted.
