William Watkins (Born 12/4/1884, Yorkley, Forest of Dean?)

Post by foggy374, 11-07-2010, 18:03:

Hello I'm beginning my search for family history

I would be grateful if anyone knows of William Watkins (my great grandfather)
Date and Place of birth on his death certificate is 12/4/1884 Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. He died 8/4/1969 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. I'm unable to find a birth registration or baptism to trace family further back. He moved to Nuneaton, Warwickshire and married Eliza Starkey on 16/4/1906. I don't know if he had siblings or his parents names. His father's name on the marriage cert is William Watkins.

Thank you very much in advance for anyone's help.

Reply from firefighter2112, 10-07-2010, 08:13:

Hi Jennifer,
William Watkins (1822-1878) had a brother Richard. I am Richard's great, great grandson.
Rebecca was William and Martha Watkin's 3rd daughter. I haven't drilled down past Rebecca but would be interested in swapping information, photos etc.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Post by mamafoxof3, 06-07-2010, 05:50:

My grandmother, Pearl Seymour Watkins, wife of Thomas Jefferson Watkins, put together a fairly extensive family tree that started with William Milton and running through roughly the mid-1980's.

William Watkins (b.1740) who came to Maryland

Reply from mamafoxof3, 06-07-2010, 05:46:

I am a direct descendant of William Milton Moses Watkins. My grandmother, Pearl Seymour Watkins (married to Thomas Jefferson Watkins) did an extensive family tree many years ago. I ran across my copy today, and found this information:

"There is no record of any of William Milton Watkins' brothers.

There were 5 brothers who came to America from England. When their father died, 4 returned to England but he did not go as his wife wasw afraid he would drown.. There were only sailing vessels at that time.

English law at that time was that all living children had to be present at the reading of the will. Since he did not go the property was finally taken over by the Country of England.

Soon after this, the church (Old Church of England) where all the records of families were kept in the basement, burned and all records were lost. There are no records available before that time.

My mother tried to trace the family for Grandfather as he wanted to know if any of his family were living. The letter my mother received from England told of the above event. None of the family could be found. There were none of his family mentioned in the records that were kept after that time. Nor were there any pictures available. Grandfather wanted pictures of his father and mother.

I know that the above is true for I saw the letter at the time my mother tore it up after my father died.

The above furnished by Hazel Watkins Enslow, daughter of Daniel Milton Watkins and granddaughter of William Milton Watkins."

I have a nearly complete tree from William Milton Watkins through roughly the mid-1980's. I'll be happy to share with anyone who is interested.

Gertrude Dally Watkins

Reply from Jennifer Dally-Watkins, 26-06-2010, 05:22:

Hi Robynne,

Gertrude Dally-Watkins was David's first wife and Charles' (aka Charlie) mother.

Your Grandmother was David's second wife (Arch and Naomi's mother).
I've also discovered a death notice showing David had a third sister who died when less than two. The death was registered with her father Henry's middle initial as M rather than W.

Regards,
Marcellus's daughter, Rachel Elizabeth (Lizzie) was my great grandmother and the mother of my grandpa, Alden Frank Smith.
My mother remembers her grandma (Lizzie) well as she lived with her family for a while.
Please let me know more about how you are related, who your parents and grandparents are.
I look forward to hearing from you. My email is ctuemmler@yahoo.com.

Henry Watkins Married Rachel Cole

Reply from ctuemmler, 26-05-2010, 12:51:

Betty,
I am looking for information on my great great grandfather, Marcellus Watkins. His father was Brice Gassaway Watkins, died in 1864 (Civil War?) and his mother Nancy McDaniel. My great aunt said her mother (Lizzie Watkins, daughter of Marcellus) and their family moved in the 1880s from the Blue Ridge mountains to West Virginia by Conestoga wagon.
Do you have any info about Marcellus and his parents, his mother Nancy McDaniel in particular? I can't find too much on her.
Thanks!
